Presented by:

Sponsored By: Bosch Security Systems

Mass notification is on the mind of every building campus manager today. Tragic shootings and terrorist threats are showing no signs of declining. Public and private authorities are starting to think differently about how we notify people in case of man-made emergencies. Pulling the fire alarm does not suffice any longer. Life safety Code 101 addressed high-rise buildings after the attacks on September, 11th, 2001. However even these codes are changing as NFPA 72 is now titled for the first time, "National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code." Signaling is now including new standards on speech intelligibility. The Speech Transmission Index will replace the Common Intelligibility Scale for the first time. This means some current fire alarm based voice notification systems might not pass future speech intelligibility requirements. Learn how these new national standards will affect and change fire standards as we know them today.

Case Studies: - Detroit Public Schools (45 arrests in 4 weeks presented by PSA member Matthew Ladd and Protection Bureau) - Phoenix Construction Site - Remote Coal Mine "Blended Video architecture delivers greater security at lower cost than traditional surveillance, and we can prove it," claimed Keith Jentoft, the President of RSI Video Technologies. We have many case studies where Blended Video systems cost 25%-30% less than traditional surveillance. We are being used to secure the substations of 43 utilities, FAA radar installations and remote cell towers. Blended Video architecture combines portable MotionViewers and megapixel PTZ cameras for better surveillance at lower cost. Instead of many wired cameras (and expensive installation, trenching and puling wires to each camera), inexpensive wireless "Remote Sentries" support fewer but more powerful PTZ cameras. These sentries, Videofied MotionViewers, deliver a 10 second video of the intrusion over the cell network to operators who review the clip and notify the owners. Once alerted, property owners, guards, or law enforcement log into their surveillance cameras to coordinate real time response. The wireless MotionViewer operates outdoors for up to 4 years on 3 AA batteries. A typical install called the "bucket cam" uses two MotionViewers mounted to a pipe stuck in a 5 gallon bucket of concrete. You simply move the bucket to where you need security.

3V-058-T: IP Surveillance: Myths and Realities of TCO Calculations
Room: 28 ~ 12:45PM - 2:15PM (Tuesday, May 25, 2010)
Presented by:

Sponsored By: Axis Communications

"How much does an IP surveillance system really cost? It’s a question being asked by early and late network adopters alike. The upfront savings of Power over Ethernet (PoE) and reduced labor costs by using IP are evident, but many of the potential savings of network video are harder to put a value on. Different installations require different calculations. The truth is there are numerous factors to consider when calculating TCO for a new or existing installation. There’s not one single TCO template available that can be used to convince an end-user which system to use. However, with a little education, you’ll be able to design an IP system suitable for your unique customer’s needs, while at the same time proving that it’s the best deployment for their pocket. The session will discuss the total cost of ownership benefits of IP surveillance systems and how to calculate TCO by: • Comparing the cost for analog systems and IP systems based on equipment cost for green field installations as well as installations with existing infrastructure and/or existing cameras • Outlining the impact of H.264 on the cost analysis, and its impact on the infrastructure and storage cost • Discussing latest innovations in IP such as HDTV resolution, remote focus, pixel counter and camera tampering and how these impact installation and maintenance costs • Exploring opportunities with hosted video system and the business case."

The surveillance world has seen a number of key trends in recent years, including rising camera counts for better coverage, rapid increase in resolutions (due to technology commoditization) for better video data, and ever-extending retention times due to regulatory or best-practice requirements. These factors have pushed storage of video surveillance data in to a dominant cost factor for the security professional. The result: tight budgets that have to accommodate more and more storage to simply get the job done. This session will focus on technology from the information technology (IT) world to allow users to lower the cost and infrastructure needed to support this growing amount of data. Different approaches and technologies used to manage the lifecycle of video data will be reviewed, with the aim of providing tools to help reduce the cost of storing video data as that video ages and becomes less valuable to the business. Leveraged properly, these approaches to video data management can reduce storage requirements by 60 - 90%, allowing significant infrastructure reductions and budget re-allocation to other, high-return items such as increased camera coverage, analytics, and biometrics.
